UFC 126 ii- Jon “Bones” Jones

by B Thornton- Harwood

Another interesting development from UFC 126 was the announcement that Jon “Bones” Jones would be taking on Mauricio “Shogun” Rua for the Light Heavyweight title.

Upon submitting Ryan Bader via guillotine choke a mere nine minutes into the fight, Jones was told by Joe Rogan during his Post-fight interview that as Rashad Evans has withdrawn due to a knee injury and subsequently he was the number one contender for Shogun’s title, Jones went on to accept the shot and will face Rua on the 19th of March.

Firstly I’d like to address who was initially offered the fight. None other than Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who apparently turned down the fight due to short notice. Rampage posted on his twitter last Tuesday: “I turned down the fight cause of short notice,I would have 2 lose 45 lbs n 4 weeks,u would have 2 be a fighter 2 understand, life goes on”. Which I suppose is fair enough if the fella thinks he won’t be in shape for the fight and doesn’t want his arse handed to him on a plate.

Next is that Jones is going into the fight as the bookie’s heavy favourite to win, and this could be down to a number of things- Jones’ colossal 84 inch reach; his unreal ability to stop take downs, with a 100% success rate over his seven fights in the Octagon; but personally I believe it’s the speed at which he’s become a force to be reckoned with within MMA.

After just three years in mixed martial arts the 23 year old New York native is the third youngest fighter ever to recieve a title shot in the UFC, trailing  the legendary BJ Penn and Georges St Pierre; both of whom have had outstanding careers, with GSP being the most dominant Welterweight in UFC history, aside from perhaps Matt Hughes, BJ Penn on the other hand has both the Light and Welterweight belts to his name.

Now it’s not just that he is a young’un that I believe he’s going to have such an impact on the face of MMA it’s the fact that he has the attitude that not only makes him likeable in the same sense as Forrest, but the way he fights and the charisma he carries could be likened to Chuck or even BJ in the fact that fans will want to watch this kid fight.

And there’s no doubt in my mind that Dana and co. has duely noted the above and is set to make a lot of moeny out of Jon Bones Jones, whilst I reckon he’s got the power, skills and charisma to beat Shogun come March 19th.
